Fellow interns, I am sorry I haven't had time to blog. Its hectic hey! Actually I have noticed that most haven't been blogging so far. However, I know why. This is a very busy world we have just entered.
About my host organisation, This is a very interesting company and I am proud to remind you that the director is the lady who presented to us about branding, Nomahlubi Simamane. So, you know what Zanusi does. I am working on a project called Arts Alive that Zanusi is magaging. AWESOME!
You should all understand that after my BA in Drama, circumstances forced me into teaching and I missed Arts, the stage and everything in performing arts. For the first time I am dealing with Arts in a formal workplace without insecurities. Arts Alive is an anual event that takes place in Johannesburg every year in September. Three years ago Zanusi won a tender to manage this exciting event. I am working as an assistant project manager with a FABULOUS lady, Madeleine Wickins the project manager (when she is not "boxing my ears" or "smacking my bottom"). I am glad to say I am surrounded by an interesting team that practically applies teamwork skill.
Arts Alive has many projects with different product suppliers and I get to work with a lot of people with diverse cultures and personalities. Therefore I am forced to apply skills acquired from our training (you better believe this, "emotional intelligence and resilience" mostly). Also we interact with Artists, INTERNATIONAL and local! Really exciting.
One last thing, I have learned from ausi Noma that SEPARATING FACTS FROM EMOTIONS will get you far in the work place. Please keep on reading the workplace every Wednesday, Its quite exciting.

Hello Uta!
So good to hear from you, and it feels even better to read the enthusiasm for your work, in your blog.
What should we be looking out for in The Star Workplace specifically?
I just came across an old article Feb 9, 2005, Star Workplace, by Graeme Codrington. It's about staff retention, a comparison between traditional employment (entire working life at one company) and what is currently happening - young talent who understand that there are no guarantees for long term security in a job, and are (therefore?) reluctant to make any guarantees (e.g. loyalty) back to the workplace. What especially interested me in the article is this: "Probably the most important new currency on offer to a new generation of employees is "generic marketability". If you help your talented employees to develop skills beyond their job functions and to be marketable in an ever changing environment they will give loyalty in return."

So here is what I'm wondering: are there opportunities at Zanusi for you to develop your "generic employability"? You certainly sound committed to Zanusi - is their possible commitment to you (if you are experiencing such) a possible reason for your loyalty at this stage?
Here's a sizzling hot oportunity to network. Nolutahndo Xate was one of our interns in 2003. Her internship was at Herdbuoys, then she studied Brand Management at Vega Brand Communications School. Now she runs the Ulimi Lwami Centre at Vega to educate the media industry in dealing with South Africa's cultural diversities. Read about it at

Noli also writes for Marketing Web - go to

If you scroll to the end of her article, you can add your comment (maybe introduce yourself and ask her to visit your blog?)
I'll keep thinking about "Separating facts from emotins" for the rest of this week - thanks for sharing that.
Read you next week!

Dear Uta,
WOW...I am happy to see that the world of work is really happening for you. Congrats too on your new found status "assistant project manager", the only way is UP girl! It sounds to me like you are having the time of your life (and getting paid for it). At this point, "The pioneers of change" come to mind and I am reminded of the discussion we had on "always looking for the sparkle in your eyes" when you think about your work! I can definately hear the sparkle from here - loud and clear!!
I start my internship on monday 25Jul, and I look forward to giving you all a low down on this new journey I am about to embark on! Cheers. Dorothy Mwangi
